Beat matching vocals can be pretty tricky, especially if you are using software that is not primarily designed for it. Check out this step-by-step guide to learn how to mix acapellas in FL Studio.
Beat matching off-tempo acapellas
When an acapella track is unique, it may not be properly synced to the beat. As such, particular parts of the track need to be time stretched. This is a common occurrence in live recording sessions, usually caused by unprofessional vocalists.
To figure out what parts of the acapella are off-beat, listen to the vocal mix with the metronome enabled. Then, right click the top left corner of the vocal sample and select ‘Edit sample.’ Make sure to remove all of the markers on the waveform made by FL automatically.
Next, double click the start of the off-beat section and click ‘Create/Add/Remove marker region.’ Also do this for the end of the off-beat section. Then, right click on the first marker and hit ‘Select.’
Clicking ‘Alt+T’ will bring up the time stretch window. Adjust the ‘Time mule’ knob to the right if you want the particular section to be longer, or to the left if you want to shorten it. You can also type in how many milliseconds long you want the part to be in the ‘Length (ms)’ box.
Beat matching on-tempo acapellas
If the acapella is on beat, all you have to do is time stretch the entire track. First, sync the instrumental to the beat by setting the project tempo the same as the instrumental. Right click the acapella and select ‘Edit sample.’ The vocal sample will now open in the FL Studio audio editor. Right click on a blank space above the wave form and enter the BPM into the tempo box.
Click accept and drag the edited sample into the playlist. Double click the track and select ‘Pro Default’ from the Time stretch options. Close the window and delete the original acapella.
Finally, click on the top left corner of the edited acapella and select ‘Fit the tempo.’ Once you choose the embedded value, the acapella will be perfectly beat matched.
